Having first hit the web back in 2005, it didn’t take YouTube long to make a name for itself and get noticed by the biggest names in the business. Indeed, just a year after its inception Google took the helm for a massive $1.65 billion and took YouTube on to become the astonishing success it is today.
The statistics these days are simply mind-blowing. Every minute of every day, over a hundred hours of video is uploaded to YouTube and the site attracts no less than a billion independent users each month. Or to put it another way, at least 50% of the world’s internet-connected population uses YouTube from time to time.
Growth has been frankly astonishing and continues even today. For example, back in the spring of 2011 the site reported approximately 48-hours of footage being submitted by the hour, suggesting the rate has doubled in only two years.
“And so, on our eighth birthday, we’d like to thank you for making YouTube the special place that it is,” reads the official statement released by YouTube this morning.
