Mercedes-Benz is not exactly the first name that springs to mind when you think of hybrid vehicles. Or the second, fourth or tenth, for that matter.
However, all this looks set to change as the icon German automaker has confirmed that its very first full electric vehicle will be making its way to the US market – the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive.
Catch title, isn’t it?
And for those who think we’re looking at nothing more than a novelty to tick a box or two, the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive will apparently run circles around most of its rivals in the segment with a quite superb driving range.
According to the company, the B-Class Electric Drive will deliver an approximate range of 115 miles, courtesy of a 134BHP electric motor which takes care of zero to 60MPH in under 10-seconds and has been limited to 100MPH. 115 miles might not seem a huge range to those not yet on point with the EV market, but in terms of competition outperforms the majority of its key rivals by a good 30 to 40 miles – which is by rights an enormous step up.
Not that the 2014 B-Class Electric Drive will be on its own in Mercedes’ EV campaign, as for those looking for something a little more top-tier there’s always the SLS AMG Electric Drive that’s coming in a few months, though the latter will set you back a good half-million dollars for the privilege.
As far as the B-Class Electric Drive goes, chances are it will be a decidedly premium package inside and out and with such a high range will probably top the table in its segment with ease. Sadly, all of the above isn’t going to come cheap and while exact price details are yet to be revealed by Mercedes, we’ll definitely be looking at a premium price tag way above and beyond its closest rivals.
