The Tesla Model S looks set to square off with a new kid on the block – albeit a rather expensive one in an entirely different class. Carrying the catchy title of the SP:01, the new all-electric vehicle from Detroit Electric has officially been launched to a pretty respectable amount of fanfare.
Speaking upon the announcement of the SP:01, Detroit Electric describes the car a pure-electric two-seater sports car that will be available in limited numbers only. Boasting a pretty stunning overall design that isn’t a million miles from the Lotus Elise, the SP:01 deals with zero to 60MPH in an impressive 3.7 seconds and tops out at 155MPH.
As far as core specs and features go, the Detroit Electric SP:01 sports a 200BHP US-made electric motor and offers a range of up to 180 miles from a single charge…at least according to initial tests. The body is made of carbon fiber and the car weighs a total of 2,359 pounds.
And in terms of what you’ll have to pay for all of the above – the SP:01 from Detroit Electric is up for grabs for a price of $135,000, which is a pretty lofty sum when compared to the Tesla Model S which comes in at $57,000.
But then again, the Model S from Tesla isn’t exactly built to offer sports car performance.
According to Detroit Electric, the SP:01″spearheads a diverse family of all-electric production cars,” and is set to be joined by another pair of all-electric sports cars over the coming months.
