Will this be the year Microsoft brings the Surface ecosystem full-circle with the very first Surface Phone release date?
Windows Phone 8 has already proved to be a hugely popular OS, propelling devices like the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X right to the forefront of the high-end market. Sadly however the same cannot be said for the Microsoft RT Tablet, which since its release date late last year has garnered only “modest” sales in the words of company CEO Steve Ballmer.
There have also been numerous reports of poor performance of the RT and accessories that are somewhat too much on the fragile side of things.
Nevertheless, the Surface Pro release date is literally just days away and with it come fresh stirrings suggesting that a Microsoft Surface Phone could indeed be penciled in for some time later this year. Given the way in which the Surface Tablet venture is thus far proving less the show-stopping while third-party brands enjoy more than modest success with Windows Phone 8, it could be that a Surface Phone is what’s needed to bring all the pieces together for Microsoft.
On the other hand, it could be another disastrous foray into hardware that does little more than sour consumers, partner OEM and investors alike. Still, this was exactly what was said prior to the Surface Tablet announcement last year, so history may be destined to repeat.
Leaks are flying out thick and fast and despite the project having been denied by senior Microsoft staff, workers at assembly giant Foxconn in China have stated that component orders have already been placed for a summer 2013 release date of the Surface Phone.
With regard to specs and features of the Surface Phone – aka the Juggernaut Alpha, apparently – we’ve been told to expect a multicore processor, a large screen around 4.5-inches packing 300ppi resolution and an 8-megapixel camera all as standard. But then again, you could say the same about any decent Smartphone to be released in 2013.
Still, an exciting year ahead to say the least with more answers than you can shake a stick at!
