Here’s a debate that really needs some focus – should the iPhone 5S deliver the most mind-scrambling list of specs and features so far, or concentrate more on satisfying bang for buck
You have to wonder whether this is the very point being pondered by the Cupertino collective right now, though chances are they’ll have made their decision about three years ago and have no intent on changing it now. In any case, the iPhone 5S will be different from any and every iPhone to date for one very simple reason:
It has to be
Until now, the iPhone has wowed by just being an iPhone and has by rights enjoyed and easy ride. I mean seriously…would anyone be blown away by an Android device which only by the fall of 2012 had managed to boast a ‘huge’ 4-inch screen? And how about that ‘Retina’ quality display that’s now not even taking podium position? Add into the mix CPU speeds, RAM, battery life, OS updates, camera quality and a few other essentials and you have yourself at least a dozen ways in which the iPhone 5 technically sucks compared to its rivals
It’s never been a case of Apple having to play catch-up in terms of both specs and innovation, but this time around the iPhone 5S has the weight of the world on its shoulders. And realistically speaking Apple only has two choices – one of which being to take the obvious road with another upgrade and the other being to release a cheap iPhone the other 50% of the world can actually affor
The latter is the only guaranteed winner as were Apple to go down the upgrade road, it would have to be the mother of all upgrades that managed to run circles around the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One and the Google Nexus
Forgive the cynicism, but I for one can’t see that happening.
A cheap iPhone is a guaranteed hit…albeit technically an unimaginative one…but the risk of launching a sup-par iPhone 5S that once again tops the table in terms of price is insurmountable
So what’s it going to be? Are we in for a new definition of bang for buck or off the scale specs and features that make the iPhone5S the most amazing Smartphone in the history of history?
It has to be one of the two – the only third option is a lame minor upgrade of the iPhone 5 which for all intents and purposes would be unforgivable.
