Here’s the good news – BlackBerry devotees in the US officially have an alternative to waiting until March to pick up the new BlackBerry 10.
And the bad news – GSM Nation is charging a rather painful $1,000 for those looking to jump the gun and take home a BlackBerry Z10 today on the Solavei network.
While the four biggest names in the US have already pledged their intention to offer the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile are yet to confirm any official release dates or timeframes. What’s more, Verizon is the only network to have so far indicated the price the BlackBerry Z10 will retail for – that being $199 with a modest 12-month contract.
Early response to the BlackBerry Z10 has been huge and $1,000 price-tag or not, chances are that hundreds across the US will be fighting tooth-and-nail to be one of the first to take one home. The question is – will they be proud of their investment and the envy of the commoners, or will they once again find themselves hiding their devices and gazing longingly at the Android camp like BlackBerry users of old?
Well, the immediate bonus is of course the fact that the BlackBerry Z10 on sale right now is 100% unlocked – meaning complete and total freedom from contracts and long-term payment commitments. What’s more, Solavei offers an all-encompassing unlimited plan that covers calls, data and text messaging for a measly $50 per month – something none of the big four will in all likelihood beat.
As for the phone itself, there’s little denying that the BlackBerry Z10 is a hugely impressive piece of kit with a world class OS and a rapidly growing top-tier app library, but it remains to be seen how well all of the above copes with the stranglehold Android and Apple have on the market.
It could be that BlackBerry 10 is the start of something truly remarkable, or nothing more than a flavor of the month.
…and a $1,000 flavor at that – make your call!
