Decking out for Halloween 2012
Every year there is a favorite spook that becomes all the rage; not just for the Halloween fright night, but as a pervading interest in scary monsters. For quite a few years, vampires dominated this role, partly through the influence of sympathetic and not-so-sympathetic vampire movies, and partly through a generation that loves all things Gothic. While vampires continue to be one of the most popular ghouls, this year the main focus has been on zombies. One is not fashionable unless he or she has seen at least one zombie at a Halloween party.
Among the kids, however, it’s a dive into the comic book heroes. The Avengers is among the top “what I wish to be” list, but Captain America is not the number one item. Spider Man costumes are selling like hot cakes among young boys, and all the little girls want to be Disney’s Brave Merida. Some girls are still in love with the ethereal monster bride, while others wish to be an angry bird. If a boy doesn’t wish to be a super hero, chances are he wants to be a werewolf.
For women’s costumes, it’s all about sexy, particularly for plus sizes. Sexy Spider Woman, Cat Woman and Black Widows are popping up at every costume festival, reflecting once again on comic book heroes and anti-heroes. Even if one is a witch, she has to have an equally alluring and scary presence.
When it comes to dressing up girls for Halloween costumes in 2012, think Disney. Minnie Mouse goes big on maximum charm and is sure to be the delight of the retro party. A tiny tot second is Snow White, while baby boys are raking in the raves as mini-Frankenstein and baby owl.
Halloween 2012 is no longer just a time to dress up the kids and take them trick or treating. Everyone wants to get into the action, playing somebody else for a day, and even pets can join the festivities. There’s Underdog for a mighty mutt and Superman for a big rottweiler. Just to prove a dog can be a star, there’s also Lady Dogga and Elvis. Whatever the choice of costume, Halloween night will be that much more enjoyable when a pet is the top dog.
Halloween continues to be one of the most expressive and creative holidays in terms of fashion.
