The Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet is just about to land in the US and answer dozens of crucial questions for the brand – perhaps also clarifying whether or not we can expect a Surface Phone release date anytime in the near future.
Talk of Microsoft launching a Surface Smartphone has been drifting in and out of the industry pretty much ever since the Surface Pro and RT Tablets were announced early last year. The theory is basically one whereby the Surface Phone would represent the final missing piece from the new Surface ecosystem, which would see Microsoft hardware behaving more like Apple’s iOS ecosystem than ever before.
On paper the idea sounds not only promising but almost guaranteed to become a reality, though there’s been a slight spanner thrown into the works in the meantime and may be joined by the mother of all wrenches this weekend.
…the Surface RT was on outright disaster and the Surface Pro is thus far looking like a device that cannot and will not catch on with the masses.
So far, Microsoft has failed to strike even the most rudimentary of chords with the consumer public as to the worth, value or general viability of its Surface Tablet hardware line. While fingers are collectively crossed for a surprise success story with the Surface Pro as of its release date this weekend, the reality is looking considerably less rosy.
And if this happens to be the case – what of the Microsoft Surface Phone?
Well, if the Surface Tablet project had never been dreamed up by Microsoft, chances are that the Surface Phone would never have been uttered as a possibility by even the deepest ranks of the rumor-mill. As such, if the Surface Tablet project fails, it is technically in a position that’s worse than never have existing as all it will have done is brought a touch of the shame-brush to Microsoft.
Add the above together and you can pretty much rule out the chances of a Microsoft Surface Phone release date in this lifetime or the next – the Surface brand would in all likelihood be abandoned.
As such, this weekend’s Surface Pro launch even could have seriously wide-reaching ramifications for the brand as a whole, meaning that if you’re one of the admittedly large group that would love to see a Surface Phone this year or any other, it might be time to think about crossing your toes too!
