With just a day to go until Green Day’s first album since 2009 officially hits the shelves, front-man Billie Joe Armstrong doesn’t seem ready to leave the “21st Century Breakdown” theme in the past.
After having one of his own on stage over the weekend, he’s now on his way to rehab.
An official announcement from the band’s management was issued on Sunday to confirm that following Billie Joe’s quite viscous outburst at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday, he is indeed on his way to rehab for substance abuse. As Green Day was heading toward the end of its truncated performance slot, Armstrong took the liberty of letting the crowd and the world know exactly how he felt about half of his slot being cancelled to make room for Usher.
As Green Day was wrapping up its performance, Armstrong profanely complained that the band’s time was being cut short.
“One minute left, one minute ******* left. You’re gonna give me ******* one minute? I’m not ******* Justin Bieber, you ********!” is just a sample of the extensive rant Armstrong spat at festival officials, before smashing his guitar to pieces, showing a middle finger and storming off.
Just Bieber wasn’t in attendance.
A statement was quickly released by Green Day to offer sincere apologies to anyone that may have been offended by the outburst, making clear that it was not the decision of Clear Channel – the festival’s organizers – to cut their slot short. Having originally been booked to play for 25 minutes, the band’s set was cut to just 25 minutes in order to allow for a longer slot for Usher.
While Armstrong concentrates on his recovery, Green Day has been forced to shelve a number of appearances scheduled for the promotion of “Uno” which is to launch Tuesday. The album marks the first in three that the band is to release over the coming months, with “Dos” to follow in November and “Tres” in January.
Green Day is also scheduled to begin a US tour in Seattle on November 26th – assuming Armstrong can get himself together in the meantime.
Billie Joe was recently hospitalized while touring Italy for an unknown ailment, though made a fast recovery and went on to perform at the MTV VMAs on September 6th. It was never made clear as to why he was hospitalized, though his track record incudes DUI offences and the admission of drug use – a practice he now claims to avoid.
In other news, Brice Springsteen marked turning 63 in spectacular style until 2am Sunday morning, with the woman he literally owes his life to joining him on stage.
Showing a generation of seniors exactly how it’s done, Adele Springsteen danced her heart out and sang backing vocals to “Twist and Shout” long into the night.
