We’ve been hearing quite a lot about the fabled Apple iWatch and Samsung Galaxy Watch over recent weeks, but in many respects both of the above devices have been pipped at the post by a brand you might not even have heard of.
For those unwilling to wait any longer to pair up their Smartphones with their wristwatches for both convenience and for the sheer hell of it, the new Pebble from startup company Pebble – thus the Pebble Pebble – will let you know when your iPhone or Android Smartphone has received a text, email or any other such message.
What’s more, it can also be used to control audio playback and display the usual details like track name, album detail and so on.
And yes, it also doubles up as a fully functional watch that tells the time!
The pebble will set you back a reasonable $150, which although a fair chunk of change for a modest convenience is probably a lot less that the Apple iWatch and the Samsung Galaxy Watch will cost. That being said, there are apparently plenty of new features and apps in the pipeline from Pebble to be used with the Pebble, which means its functionality is only set to grow over the coming months.
That being said, it’s worth bearing in mind that the Pebble is in no way a separate communication device and therefore cannot be used for calling, text messaging, web surfing or anything else of a similar nature.
As far as its forthcoming rivals go however, both the Samsung Galaxy Watch and the Apple iWatch are expected to launch later this year and serve as fully-functional remote-controls for their respective Android and iOS devices. Again however, it’s still a question of whether or not the gimmick really has what it takes to hit the big time, but we all know how powerful the fabled Apple and Samsung Galaxy badges are when it comes to shifting units.
