Rumors surrounding the Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie release date and indeed the existence of the OS have been doing the round pretty much ever since Android Jelly Bean hit the market earlier this year. However, when Android 4.2 Jelly Bean launched just a few weeks ago, some began to question whether or not the fabled version 5.0 was even in the pipeline at all – let alone for the near future.
It would appear that the rumor mill has reason for a self-administered pat on the back this time, as what amounts to near official confirmation has been offered almost directly from an employee of Google.
A charming doodle was posted online by a Google employee this week which depicts the evolution of Android, using the same ape to human drawing most will immediately recognize. In the Android version, our little green friend is one-by-one consuming the different “flavors” of the Android OS released over the years, with the final treat in the lineup following Jelly Bean appearing as a tell-tale green pie.
Not only would this suggest that Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is well and truly on its way, but that Google is confident that the next-generation version of the market-leading mobile OS will represent the most evolved and mature to date.
As for further details including features to expect with Android 5.0, it really is a case of elaborate guesswork at this stage, unfortunately.
What we do know however is that the Google I/O conference for 2013 will take place on the 15th of May, which would seem like a perfect timeframe to introduce the latest and greatest version of Android. What’s more, rumor has it that Android 5.0 may also be joined at the same event by a brand-new Nexus Smartphone and Tablet PC built around Jelly Bean, along with a final update on the progress of Google’s Project Glass.
