Hoping to score a cheap unlocked iPhone 5 directly from an official Apple Store? Get ready to join a collective sigh of disappointment – depending on your definition of cheap, of course.
While Apple hasn’t yet made any official announcements as to the availability or price of the unlocked iPhone 5 via its official website, pricing details appear to have leaked their way online and been spotted by the beady eyes of the AppleInsider team. Carrying out a search for the unlocked iPhone 5 delivers no results, but does (or did) bring up a sidebar showing the various unlocked models and their price tags – most of which are (or were) in line with those of previous unlocked iPhones.
If the leak proves to be a genuine sign of things to come, the unlocked iPhone 5 with 16GB of storage will be available from Apple for $649, while the 32GB and 64GB versions will be offered for $749 and $849 respectively. Other than the prices, the leak also appears to confirm that both the black and white versions of the unlocked iPhone 5 will be available in CDMA and GSM variants.
Meanwhile, the unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been spotted on sale via a number of third-party retailers for $579.99 – for the 16GB variant. Most are reportedly to have been limited deals that may no longer be available, though the same price has been reportedly offered by a growing number of retailers stocking the unlocked Note 2.
The unlocked 16GB Galaxy Note 2 has generally been retailing for around the $650 mark and is expected to be a huge hit over the Christmas shopping period. The Note 2 still remains one of the pricier Smartphones when purchased with a two-year contract – often around $300 – which has led consumers in droves to target the contract-free unlocked models.
